Foursquare partners with Microsoft, enhances tracking system

Foursquare – a social networking company that relies on users checking in on mobile devices from locations around the world – announced a partnership with Microsoft on Tuesday.

“So, in the near future, when you use Microsoft devices powered by the Windows and Windows Phone operating systems and products like Bing, places will be enhanced by Foursquare,” according to a blog post on the Foursquare website.

The move should allow Microsoft to personalize search results and better target ads, according to a report, which adds that a Microsoft investment of $15 million will give the company exclusive rights to Foursquare's new tracking system.

The new tracking system is said to actively monitor user locations – instead of them having to check in – and provides information on physical movements, as well as preferred locations.
