HackingTeam spying manuals posted online

October 30, 2014

Manuals divulging how HackingTeam, an Italian surveillance software vendor, instructs its customers to use its “Remote Control System” were leaked online this week, along with screenshots.

The manuals, dating backing to September 2013, specifically instruct technicians, administrators and analysts on how to infect devices, according to The Intercept, which posted the manuals. The software can be installed manually through a USB stick, a phishing attack or email scam.

Additionally, snoopers can use “network injectors” to intercept web traffic and replace it with malicious code. Other network injections can emulate an access point, or a public Wi-Fi hotspot, to install spyware when a user connects.

The manuals also explain how the software deploys tools to evade passwords and break into Wi-Fi networks. Provided screenshots show exactly how thoroughly the software can monitor a device.
