Technology sites “riskier” than illegal sites in 2013, according to Symantec data

June 16, 2014

The “riskiest” pages to visit in 2013 were technology websites, according to data from users of Norton Web Safe, which monitors billions of traffic requests and millions of software downloads per day.

Relying heavily on malware and fake anti-virus delivery, technology websites made up 9.9 percent of all infected websites, while business websites accounted for 6.7 percent, according to a Wednesday post.

Illegal websites fell behind hosting and blogging websites, respectively, according to the post, which explains that hosting sites were used to spread scams and blogging sites used browser exploits.

Roughly 67 percent of sites that delivered malware were legitimate, albeit compromised, according to the post. Shopping, entertainment, automotive, virtual community, and educational websites respectively rounded out the rest of the 2013 “risky” list.
