RadioShack, state coalition reach terms on sale of customer data

May 21, 2015

RadioShack has reached an agreement with a coalition of 38 states, led by Texas, regarding the bankrupt retailer's sale of information collected from over 67 million customers and a bankruptcy court has approved the settlement.

The terms were in line with FTC recommendations made earlier this week and will give customers the opportunity to be removed from RadioShack's list.

Buyer General Wireless will keep only the email addresses of those requesting product information over the last two years and will be bound by RadioShack's policy to not resell the information. Transaction information sold is limited to seven of the original 21 data fields proposed.

A release from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's office said the majority of data will be destroyed and social security numbers, credit and debit card numbers, phone numbers, and date of births will not be sold.
