Dutch DPA investigating Facebook

The Dutch Data Protection Authority (DPA) is investigating Facebook after the social media company implemented a new privacy policy effective Jan. 1.

The Dutch DPA is looking into how Facebook may be using personal data in its targeted advertising initiatives, according to a report in The RegisterFacebook's new policy has raised the concerns of privacy advocates, consumers and regulators.

Depending on the results of the investigation, the DPA's interest could prove costly to the company. 

In December, the DPA hit Google with an incremental penalty payment that could add up to as much as 15 million euros (or $18.6 million) for violating the Dutch data protection act by combining “personal data of internet users, amongst others to display personalized ads,” according to a press release.
