On Tuesday, Verizon published its second transparency report revealing government demands for customer data – and it appears the service provider is on track to receive requests in the ballpark of last year's count.
According to the telecom giant, U.S. law enforcement made 148,903 demands for customer information from January 1 to June 30, 2014. In the first half of 2013, Verizon received 160,773 government requests.
The transparency report revealed that, this year, the majority of demands (72,342) came in the form of subpoenas. Second in demand type were “general orders” (33,313), defined as court orders signed by a judge where police made the “requisite showing required under law” to demand such evidence.
In January – amid public outrage over NSA's access to Americans' communications – Verizon became the first major telecom company to publish a transparency report detailing law enforcement requests for customer data.
