Mormon Church impacted by data breach

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had some of its members' and associates' personal information exposed following a cyberattack in March, reports CNET. Church members, employees, contractors, and friends had their full names, birthdates, gender, home and email addresses, and phone numbers compromised as a result of the incident, which has only been recently confirmed at the behest of law enforcement. "U.S. federal law enforcement authorities suspect that this intrusion was part of a pattern of state-sponsored cyberattacks aimed at organizations and governments around the world that are not intended to cause harm to individuals," said the Mormon church. However, church officials noted that the incident has not impacted donation histories and online donation-related banking information. Moreover, notifications are already being sent to individuals whose data may have been impacted. "Law enforcement authorities believe the risk that the information will be used to harm individuals is low and our monitoring efforts have not identified any attempts of harmful use," said the church.
