Tumblr offers SSL encryption option

Tumblr users looking to bolster security on their blogs can now opt for SSL security. The popular blogging platform enabled the security function earlier this week, according to the site's official feed.

The option isn't the default, however, and bloggers looking to encrypt their site must select the option through their account settings. SSL encryption reduces the risk of eavesdropping by unintended visitors on a web page.

Some Tumblr user passwords were compromised in July of last year, which prompted an app update for iPhones and iPads.

Yahoo Mail and Google have also recently transitioned into SSL encryption. Yahoo Mail uses SSL as a default, but received some criticism for not implementing perfect forward secrecy, as Google did.
