Ransomware attack disrupts Canadian university

University of Waterloo in Canada has disclosed that its on-campus Microsoft Exchange servers have been impacted by an averted ransomware attack on May 30, according to The Record, a news site by cybersecurity firm Recorded Future. While the attack has prompted the deactivation of the email system and temporary prevention of access to various educational platforms, cloud-stored Exchange accounts, which account for most of the university's email accounts, have not been affected, said University of Waterloo Vice President Jacinda Reitsma. "This means that for most people on campus, your email access is unaffected. As we continue to investigate the impact of this breach, we may need to isolate more services which means you may not be able to access some systems throughout the day today," Reitsma added. The university has already performed a successful system reset but password changes have been advised for students and faculty members before June 8.
