Google launches Chrome extension to combat phishing

A new Google Chrome extension, Password Alert, could put a stop to phishing campaigns, or at least those aimed at stealing victims' Google logins.

The extension will warn users if they type their Google password into a site that isn't a Google sign-in page, according to a company blog post on the release. If the extension is installed and enabled, Chrome will remember a “scrambled” version of a user's password, and when it is typed into a site that isn't a verified log-in page, a warning will pop up.

“This alert will tell you that you're at risk of being phished so you can update your password and protect yourself,” the blog stated.

This extension is also available for Google for Work, meaning that administrators can install it on employees' computers to help combat phishing in the workplace.
