In economic forum, U.S. talks gov’t sponsored theft with Chinese officials

This week, U.S. officials expressed their concerns about government-sponsored cyber theft emanating from China – but apparently skirted the issue of whether of the country was involved in the massive breach at the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) which some officials have linked to China.

On Monday, the annual forum on strategic and economic concerns kicked off, bringing more than 400 Chinese officials into the nation's capital for the three-day talk. Though cybersecurity affairs – a tense subject for the nations – arose in the discussion, U.S. officials tiptoed around the subject of the OPM breach, which impacted the personal data of millions of federal workers, NBC News reported Tuesday.

Instead, U.S. officials, like Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew, approached cybersecurity concerns by pointing to overarching issues, the outlet said. “[The U.S. is] deeply concerned about government-sponsored theft from companies and commercial sectors,” Lew said.
