Deer.io operator receives 30-month prison term

The U.S. Department of Justice announced that Kirill Victorovich Firsov, a Russian hacker and operator of Deer.io, a website that caters to cybercriminals, was sentenced to serve 30 months in jail after pleading guilty to hacking-related charges in January, reports CyberScoop.

Firsov, who was arrested in 2020, was accused of operating the site since 2013. Deer.io sells stolen credit card information and other personal data, and has amassed sales worth $17 million and sold at least $1.2 million stolen information from the U.S., the DOJ stated. Stolen data typically involved names, Social Security numbers, current addresses and telephone numbers.

“The FBI will identify and pursue criminal actors in the cyber-sphere, regardless of where they operate, and work to bring them to justice in a United States court,” said FBI special agent Suzanne Turner.

Firsov faces a jail sentence of up to 10 years, and has already served 15 months in prison during the pandemic, said U.S. District Judge Cynthia Bashant.
