CA warranty will pay customers if they’re victimized

CA announced today that it is taking an unprecedented step in consumer security protection by offering to pay its customers if they are the victims of virus infections or identity theft.

The company is starting a warranty program that will be offered with the company's newly released CA Internet Security Suite 2007.

Administered by the Warranty Corporation of America (WaCA), it will pay identity theft victims up to $5,000 if they have purchased the product and registered for WaCA's Mobile Lifeline software. This sum can be used to pay for lost wages, legal fees, re-filing applications and fixing credit reports.

Similarly, consumers who buy the product and register for the warranty are eligible for up to $1,500 if they are affected by a virus in order to cover tech support, repair services and hardware replacement.

According to the recent Consumer Reports State of the Net Survey, virus infections caused an estimated 2.6 million households to replace their computers in the past two years, and the total estimated damage as a result of virus infections is $5.2 billion.

Meanwhile, according to the 2006 Identity Fraud Survey Report the mean fraud amount per victim is expected to be as high as $6,383 and the time to resolve the issue can be as high as 40 hours per victim.
