Canadian telecom Rogers releases transparency report

Canadian telecommunications giant Rogers has released its 2014 transparency report, revealing the number of law enforcement requests it received for customer data – as well as requests it refused.

The report (PDF) showed that Rogers received 113,655 law enforcement requests last year, down from 174,917 demands in 2013. Of the total requests, the company said that it did not turn over customer data for 2,278 requests made last year – including one large request that would have involved the information of more than 30,000 Rogers customers.

The company added that law enforcement eventually withdrew that request.

Breaking down demands by type, Rogers revealed that 71,501 requests for information came by way of court orders (including search warrants) from authorities, and that 10,016 were deemed "emergency requests from police," which entailed assisting law enforcement in missing persons' cases or investigations involving individuals in distress, the report said.
