Companies combine to face biometric challenge

Security firms De La Rue Identity Systems and BioDentity Systems have teamed up to provide international travel document and border clearance solutions that work using biometrics.

The companies aim to provide facial biometric solutions for Governments that intend to comply with the International Civil Aviation Organization's (ICAO) global standards.

From October 2004, the 27 countries participating in the US visa waiver programme are expected to incorporate facial biometrics to comply with the ICAO standards.

There are currently a number of immigration related biometric projects underway in a bid to increase travel security and identity management in countries such as the UK, Canada, Germany, New Zealand and Australia.

US anti-terrorism measures and the increase in identity theft are estimated to cost at least $50 Billion per year.
