Company news: Recent acquisitions, Secunia’s new CEO, and more

»Marcia Hofmann (left) has launched her own legal practice called the Law Office of Marcia Hofmann. In May, she left her position as a senior staff attorney for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a San Francisco-based nonprofit that defends the public's privacy rights and online freedoms, to launch the firm. Hofmann's San Francisco-based practice will focus on cases relating to a broad range of civil liberties issues, including computer security, electronic privacy, free expression and copyright.

»Deloitte, a consulting firm that offers tax, auditing, financial and risk management services, has acquired security firm Vigilant's suite of threat management products. With the purchase, Deloitte plans to expand its offerings for high-risk industry sectors, like technology, aerospace, defense and financial firms. Jersey City, N.J.-based Vigilant provides security and consulting services to mitigate corporate threats. 

»Vista Equity Partners, an Austin-based private equity firm that invests primarily in software and technology companies, has acquired Websense. Headquartered in San Diego, Websense specializes in mitigating corporate data theft. The company was purchased for about $1 billion, and the deal is expected to close prior to the third quarter of this year. 

»Jim Ulam (right) has joined Lancope, an Atlanta-based firm that provides security intelligence and network visibility services, as general counsel and corporate secretary. Ulam brings more than 22 years of legal experience to his new role. He previously worked in general counsel positions at Dell SecureWorks and Verisign, a Reston, Va.-based domain name and security services provider.

»Peter Colsted has joined Secunia, a Denmark-based security firm, as CEO. Prior to this role, Colsted was the senior director for EMEA specialist sales at Microsoft, where he spent more than four years leading the tech giant's Incubation Organization, which supports and educates start-up software development firms. As CEO at Secunia, he will be responsible for growing the company's international brand.

»Rob Haslam has joined HID Global, an Irvine, Calif.-based secure identity solutions firm, as vice president of government identity solutions. In his role, he will be responsible for development and expansion of the company's solutions for government-issued IDs in numerous countries. Haslam has more than 20 years of international business development experience, and in leading sales of security solutions for the public sector, at L-1 Identity Solutions and De La Rue

»AlephCloud, a Sunnyvale, Calif.-based cloud security start-up, has secured $7.5 million in funding led by Handbag, a San Jose, Calif.-based venture capital firm. The funding will support cloud-based content and device management innovation at AlephCloud.
