Summary

This product is not, in the strictest sense of the term, an extrusion detection product. Rather, it is an audit/ inspection tool that finds information hidden in files. In that regard it is a first-rate product for verifying both accidental and intentional data leakage. It is not a steganography tool in that it does not extract inter-pixel data. Rather it looks for metadata, overlays within a document, etc.

Installation is quite simple. The product uses a simple wizard, demands a license key and you’re off. Once the product is installed, the administrator can add users and the application supports LDAP (lightweight directory access protocol) authentication. The next step is adding policies. You can use pre-made policies or create unique policies for your situation. After policies are finished, users may logon to the server and perform inspections.

Inspections can be based on metadata, file or document format or dirty (sensitive) words or terms. You perform inspections by using a web browser and pointing to the server. You then select a file to inspect and let PuriFile do its work. You will see the result in detail in the web-based report.

A very nice feature of the product is the Assistant. There are Assistants for Word, Excel and PowerPoint. These Assistants watch as you create a document in these applications and set off an alarm if you violate a policy. Once a violation has been found, PuriFile supports a “cleansing” process that can include the text or other violation, as well as macros disallowed by your policy.

We liked this product for what it is — not an extrusion prevention tool that sits on the network and monitors packets — and we see lots of uses for it in enterprises of just about any size.

Documentation is excellent, but we were disappointed with the web site. There is a support portal, but to access it you must subscribe. For the first year, however, support is included.

PuriFile is priced at $6,750 for a 25-seat configuration, including the first-year support program. Prices drop significantly with higher quantities making it very reasonably priced.
