New Zealand logged 219 cyber events in 2013, NCSC reports

The number of cyber security incidents in New Zealand rose significantly in 2013 to 219, up from 134 recorded incidents the year before, according to a report from the New Zealand National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).

While NCSC, which records cyber incidents that affect private sector, government agencies and critical infrastructure providers, attributed the increase in part to “greater awareness of the importance of reporting incidents,” the report revealed that  scam and spam incidents and denial of service (DoS) attacks comprised the lion's share of reported events, accounting for 30 percent and 22 percent of the incidents, respectively.

Malware claimed third place at 12 percent.

The greatest number of incidents (63 percent) originated overseas  while 31 percent came from domestic sources. And, the private sector was the target 68 percent of the time with 25 percent of the attacks aimed at government.
