Spike in cyberattacks expected to exploit upcoming Olympics, report

A security firm has issued a warning to fans of the upcoming Olympics to be wary of phony offers, according to the Times of Israel.

Based on spikes in cyberactivity before previous sporting events it has analyzed, Tel Aviv-based cybersecurity firm Cytegic is expecting a similar surge leading up to the Olympics in Brazil in August.

Fraudulent offers will include ticket sales and travel packages, the firm warned. But activity won't be limited to money-making schemes. Hacktivists are likely to attack government sites to advocate for their causes, Cytegic stated.

“Government institutions and banks must be prepared for possible attacks and increase awareness and training of their employees who have access to the most valuable information,” said Dan Pastor, head of intelligence at Cytegic. “They must make sure they implement security controls on their networks, web applications and infrastructure.”

Pastor added that he expected denial of service attacks, defacement, ransomware and social engineering.
