Survey: Organizations lagging in effective data usage

A survey of 525 data leaders in organizations with over 1,000 employees highlighted how data privacy and security requirements are preventing organizations from managing and effectively using data, with 55% of respondents claiming they often receive data for analysis that is already too out-of-date and 84% saying they believe their organizations’ access to data over the next 24 months will be limited by privacy and security rules, according to ZDNet. The poll, conducted by 451 Research for S&P Global Market Intelligence and Immuta, found that at least 90% view data quality and trust as increasingly more important than volume and a majority noted the role of chief data officer is becoming more vital in an organization. However, only 60% of organizations employed a chief data officer, while nearly 40% of respondents who are data suppliers said they struggle to perform tasks because of a lack of skills or staff. Nearly 30% say they suffer from lack of automation. The survey also found an increased reliance on the cloud, with 76% of respondents saying their organizations use cloud data technology for storage. Meanwhile, those reluctant to move to the cloud cited they have issues with security, compliance and data privacy. “Respondents from regulated organizations were also much more likely to report their organization had a cloud-first (31%) or cloud-forward (45%) adoption strategy, while respondents from non-regulated organizations were disproportionately more likely to report a cloud-conservative (46%) or cloud-skeptic (9%) strategy. The assumption that regulated industries or firms tend to shy away from cloud technology is outdated at best,“ the report stated.
