Billing information from at least 750 ambulance patients may be at risk after a breach, the Philadelphia Fire Department said.
In 2012 Advanced Data Processing (ADP) Inc., also known as Intermedix, the company that handles ambulance billing, experienced a breach when an employee stole data in a scheme to file fraudulent tax returns, according to a Government Technology report.
The scheme affected fire departments across the country. Despite assurances that the Philadelphia department was not impacted, officials learned of the breach's severity in February when a person arrested in Florida was found in possession of information from the caper.
The department is offering free credit monitoring and fraud resolution services to those affected, which include patients who used Philadelphia ambulances between February and September of 2012. Victims should check with the IRS to ensure no fraudulent taxes have been filed.
