Attackers stole data after they accessed the internal server of the Bundestag, Germany's lower house of parliament, according to a report from Deutsche Welle.
The international broadcaster quoted a Bundestag spokeswoman as saying the government had discovered "scattered data outflows" after the breach and alerted the agencies affected.
A Greens party politician, Steffi Lamke, was quoted as saying that the attack, accomplished with the use of trojan viruses, was “worse than previously thought” and showed that “the Interior Ministry has completely missed out on establishing a functioning cyber defense.”
The attack appeared to be the work of a foreign spy agency and prompted the Bundestag to shut down parts of its systems, including the drives of a parliamentary committee investigating allegations that the German intelligence agency BND spied on officials at the behest of the National Security Agency (NSA), Spiegel Online was said to have reported.
