Nearly 10,000 motorists in the U.K. could be impacted by a breach that exposed details of their parking tickets online.
A backdoor into a database belonging to PaymyPCN.net, which has reportedly collected parking fines for two decades and is linked to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) database, allows the public to access information, including names and addresses, according to a report by Sky News.
Motorists can pay fines via the PaymyPCN.net website and other information, such as emails appealing penalty charges and photos of drivers taken by police, can be accessed. Sky News reported that a consumer activist, Michael Green, tweeted out a link to the data.
A DVLA spokeswoman told Sky News that the error didn't stem from the agency, which reportedly has been criticized for not adequately auditing the third party parking companies to which it sells data.
