Canadian military wants to hack cars

The Canadian Department of National Defence put a $825,000 contract up for bid to find a firm that will study how to hack an automobile and come up with a mitigating response.

The call citing that unlike cyber attacks and data breaches that have a financial goal, a vehicle that is compromised and taken over is a safety hazard. The Canadian military pointed to the huge amount of data, 25GB per hour distributed internally through a car, the 100 computers found in a modern vehicle and the wired and wireless communication interfaces as reasons cars are so vulnerable.

Among the results expected from the winning firm are locating vulnerabilities, developing and demonstrating exploits and identifying potential mitigation measures that could prevent the exploit of vulnerabilities on the vehicle.

The contract offer closes in three weeks.
