City of Waukee website pulled offline after hacker defaces site

Hackers defaced an Iowa city's website on Sunday and Monday, causing officials to temporarily take the site offline.

While defaced, the Waukee city website showcased a message that read, “Welcome to the city of Cyber Czar.”

Intruders also indicated that they were the hacktivist group Anonymous, according to Ben Landhauser, a city planner that spoke to SCMagazine.com on Wednesday.

It's worth noting, however, that hackers have falsely claimed to be affiliated with the collective in the past to gain attention.

City officials are still investigating what led to the breach, but say that no sensitive information, including financial data of residents, was accessed by attackers.

The website was restored Wednesday morning.
