Microsoft plans to open two new data centers in Germany

Microsoft reported this week it will deliver several of its Cloud services from two new data centers in Germany.

The data centers will be in Frankfurt am Main and Magdeburg and will handle Microsoft Azure, Office 365 and Dynamics CRM Online and will be operated in partnership with Deutsche Telekom starting in 2016 for customers in the EU, Microsoft said.

The German telecom will act as the data trustee and Microsoft will not be able to access the stored data without Deutsche Telekom express permission and only under its supervision.

A Microsoft overseas data center in Ireland is currently the focus of a legal dispute between the company and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). The DOJ wants access to emails of a suspected drug trafficker held on a server in Ireland, but Microsoft is refusing, stating the DOJ has no authority in that country.
