Montana DPHHS notifies 1.3 million clients and staffers of nearly year-long breach

The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) is notifying about 1.3 million clients and employees that unauthorized access was gained to a server that stored their personal data, according to a Tuesday AP report.

DPHHS observed suspicious activity on May 15 and confirmed on May 22 that unauthorized access was gained to a server that stored the data, according to a notification posted earlier this month. A forensic investigation revealed that access was likely gained in July 2013.

For clients, the compromised information included names, addresses, dates of birth, dates of service, Social Security numbers and clinical information. For about 3,100 DPHHS employees and contractors, the compromised information included names, Social Security numbers, and bank account information.

There is no knowledge that information was accessed or used inappropriately.
