Clumio releases new data protection features for Amazon S3

Backup-as-a-service solution provider Clumio announced that it has launched new features to enhance backup and data protection capabilities for users of Amazon S3, according to VentureBeat. Chadd Kenney, Clumio's vice president of product, says Amazon S3, an object storage service that allows users of the AWS cloud to store data from anywhere, is becoming a critical tool for enterprises even though it runs on a shared responsibility model that leaves the burden of data backup to individual customers. Amazon does provide versioning, replication and object locking capabilities to address potential overwriting or accidental data deletion, but S3 only allows enterprises to revert objects back to a previous version, not to a specific point in time, Kenney said. Clumio attempts to resolve a few of S3s shortcomings by providing protection from accidental deletions, adherence to compliance and SLA requirements such as HIPAA, recovery from ransomware and cyberthreats and reduction of AWS backup costs, according to Kenney. The company said it tested the platform for protection of up to 30 billion objects per bucket. It features a 15-minute Recovery Point Objective for granular protection and a zero recovery time objective available in early access.
