Incoming Google Drive update to bolster security, may disrupt link sharing

Google announced in a blog post that a security update to Google Drive that has begun to roll out in three phases ending Sept. 13 will make users’ shared documents more secure but could cause some shared links to stop working, according to Bleeping Computer.

“We’re releasing a security update which will apply to some Drive files. This will make Google Drive files more secure by updating their links and may lead to some new file access requests,” Google said. “While we recommend that you apply the update, Google Workspace admins can choose how this update is applied in your organization.”

The update will add a resource key to shared Google Drive URLs, which would require users who have not previously accessed the files within or been given direct access to use the resource key. As Google Drive links created before the update do not have any resource keys, they will no longer work and users who wish to share them will need to create new links containing a resource key.
