The October 2021 Advanced Threat Research Report by McAfee showed vibrant activity during the second quarter among ransomware criminals as threat actors developed their tactics or created new ones, according to Security Boulevard.
Cybercriminals' potential targets increased with the continued transition to the cloud among organizations to accommodate workloads for remote employees, according to the report, which named the U.S. as the area with the most reported incidents during the period and Europe as having the biggest increase in incident reports, at 52% during the second quarter.
According to McAfee researchers, financial services organizations were the most challenged by cloud-based threats, accounting for 29% of cloud security incidents from among the top 10 industries as they faced dangers such as insider data exfiltration and privileged access misuse.
The report showed that the REvil/Sodinokibi family of ransomware was involved in 73% of ransomware detections in the second quarter, and ransomware showed signs of continued growth despite efforts to crack down on the practice within cybercriminal forums.
