California launches initiative to combat revenge porn

California's Attorney General Kamala Harris and its Department of Justice launched October 14 the first government-led initiative for victims and local law enforcement to combat cyber exploitation, an act sometimes referred to as "revenge porn."

It includes an online resource hub complete with tools for victims, information on how to remove images from popular sites and search engines, links to report improper use of intimate images, laws concerning cyber exploitation and the first-ever comprehensive collection of major technology platforms' privacy policies, a release said.

The resource hub features a best practice guide to help tech companies develop policies to prevent the posting and sharing of exploitative images. A digital campaign will use the hashtag #EndCyberExploitation.

A partnership of 50 major technology companies, victims' advocates and legislative and law enforcement leaders will work to develop strategies to support victims and combat cyber exploitation.
