French consumer watchdog sues tech giants over data privacy

One of the top consumer watchdogs in France has sued social media giants Twitter, Facebook and Google over their data-collection policies.

The lawsuit filed on Tuesday by UFC-Que Choisir at the French High Court, alleges that the tech firms used “abusive” and “illegal” practices when it came to the collection of the personal data of their users, according to a report by CNN.

Additionally, the suit claims that the companies failed to give any attention to warnings they received regarding the matter in June 2013. UFC-Que Choisir also accused the tech giants of continually exploiting the information of users as well as their social connections on the platforms.

This isn't the first time that a privacy group has taken action against a major tech company. In January, Google appealed a $204,000 fine related to a privacy violation ruling.
