Cisco intends to acquire OpenDNS for $635 million

On Tuesday, Cisco announced its intent to acquire privately held security company OpenDNS for – under the terms of the agreement – $635 million in cash and assumed equity awards, plus retention-based incentives for OpenDNS.

“OpenDNS provides advanced threat protection for any device, anywhere, anytime,” a Tuesday release said. “The acquisition will boost Cisco's Security Everywhere approach by adding broad visibility and threat intelligence from the OpenDNS cloud delivered platform.”

The OpenDNS platform combined with Cisco's security and threat capabilities will increase awareness across the extended network – both on premise and off premise – as well as reduce the time to detect and respond to threats and mitigate risk of a security breach, the release said.

The acquisition is expected to close in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2016, and is subject to customary closing conditions.
