Facebook privacy lawsuit moves forward

A New York appeals court gave the nod earlier this week for Facebook's lawsuit against the Manhattan district attorney's office to move forward.

The lawsuit claims that prosecutors violated the constitutional rights of 381 Facebook users when they obtained search warrants in July 2013 for everything the users kept on the social media site, according to The New York Times. Facebook argues that it should be able to object to searches if they consider them illegal, considering it has to search through files for prosecutors.

In this case, Facebook was also prohibited from telling users about the searches into their accounts, and the social media company says this was a violation of the users' free-speech rights.

The warrants were issued as part of a fraud investigation.
