FBI begins shopping around for malware

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is in the market for malware.

The federal agency posted an online listing earlier this week saying it is looking to purchase malware from a commercial supplier and is now accepting applications, according to its solicitation. The chosen provider would receive a one-year contract with the FBI, as well as, potentially, four one-year options.

The purchase of the malware would assist in its investigations and “allows the FBI to provide actionable intelligence to the investigator in both criminal and intelligence matters.” In order to qualify for the contract, the supplier must give the FBI about 30GB to 40GB of malware per day through a feed.

Additionally, the FBI must be able to retrieve the feed directly; the malware will not be pushed into federal devices.
