Sony begins accepting claims in proposed PSN settlement

Users who held a PlayStation Network (PSN), Qriocity, or Sony Online Entertainment account before May 15, 2011 could qualify for benefits from a class action settlement relating to the 2011 Sony hack that compromised roughly 77 million user accounts.

The proposed settlement offers payment equal to credit balances in inactive accounts, game and online service benefits for holders of active accounts, and reimbursements for certain out-of-pocket expenses from any identity theft as a result of the breach, the settlement site states.

PSN account holders can receive a free game for PS3 or PS, free PS3 themes or a free subscription to PlayStation Plus online services for three months, depending on whether they participated in PSN's “Welcome Back” program after service was restored.

A judge still needs to approve the settlement, and a court date is scheduled for May 1, 2015.
