Court says Facebook can’t challenge warrants from Manhattan prosecutors

A state appeals court in New York has ruled that Facebook can't challenge 381 search warrants that prosecutors in Manhattan issued to get information on the social media giant's customers, according to a report by CNN.

Prosecutors sought the user profile data as part of an investigation into Social Security fraud. Saying it was trying to protect the privacy of its customers Facebook brought a lawsuit, claiming that prosecutors violated the constitutional rights of 381 of its users when they obtained search warrants in July 2013 for everything the users kept on the social media site. Facebook argued that it should be able to object to searches if they consider them illegal, considering it has to search through files for prosecutors.

The appeals court ruling said otherwise, raising concerns among privacy advocates that user privacy will be compromised.
