The Israeli Electric Authority was hit by a massive cyberattack that has forced officials to shutdown many of the department's computers.
The ongoing attack was detected Monday during two consecutive days of record-breaking winter electricity consumption, according to the Jerusalem Post, and is being contained with assistance from the Israel National Cyber Bureau.
While addressing the Cybertech 2016 Conference in Tel Aviv on Tuesday Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz said the virus responsible for the attack has been identified and that software has been activated to neutralize it.
Steinitz went on to say the attack is one of the largest cyberattacks the county has experienced and said it is a “fresh example of the sensitivity of infrastructures.”
In July 2015, the country's National Cyber Authority reportedly warned that the nation would be targeted in a massive attack. No suspects have been identified.
