New World Hackers threaten to knock Xbox Live ‘off the face of the earth’ after outages

New World Hackers (NWH) took credit for a series of global outages on Xbox Live this week and threatened to be able to knock the gaming network "off the face of the earth".

The Anti-ISIS hacktivist group that took credit for cyberattacks against Donald Trump, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and the Black Lives Matter websites earlier this year told Newsweek their latest attack was a form of protest against major corporations that do not have adequate security protection. NWH also said it took down Xbox Live in January 2016.

“Major companies like this have massive servers but no real protection,” one of the hackers said. “We want Xbox to update the protection they have, which isn't much.”

The group tweeted a series of taunts during the outages, one of which read “It is about time XBOX dies.@XboxSupport @XBOX@KEEMSTAR Enjoy the outage..Half of U.S #OFFLINE All of Europe #OFFLINE#NwHackers.”

Microsoft has not confirmed the cause of the outages.
