Stronger FDA medical device security guidance sought

CyberScoop reports that legislation that would mandate the FDA to ensure timely federal cybersecurity guidance for medical devices has been introduced by Sens. Jacky Rosen, D-Nev., and Todd Young, R-Ind. The FDA would be tasked to collaborate with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency in developing industry and FDA staff guidelines on medical device cybersecurity every two years, as well as ensure that its website is updated with the latest vulnerabilities and support under the bill. Meanwhile, the Government Accountability Office would be required to report on cybersecurity challenges in medical devices, as well as issue federal coordination improvements in securing medical devices. "In light of increased cyber threats, we must strengthen the security of our health care system's cyber infrastructure. This bipartisan bill I introduced with Senator Young will ensure that medical devices and technologies are up to date with the latest cybersecurity, protecting patients and health care systems," said Rosen.
