Email breaches prevalent amid lacking protections

Eighty-nine percent of businesses reported at least one successful email breach during the past year, while email breach prevalence has increased by nearly twofold since 2019, most of which stemmed from Microsoft 365 phishing attacks, according to Threatpost. Ransomware attacks have risen by 71% over the past three years, while Microsoft 365 credential compromise and phishing attacks have increased by 49% and 44%, respectively, during the same period, a report from Cyren and Osterman Research revealed. More organizations have already been leveraging automated email client plug-ins for suspicious email reporting while most have been training their employees regarding email security threats at least once a year, with more frequent training surprisingly correlating with increased odds of phishing, business email compromise, or ransomware victimization. However, only 22% of organizations reported analyzing the maliciousness of all emails reported by employees . "How employees should determine the maliciousness of reported messages by themselves when they do not receive a verdict from security professionals is unclear," the report said.
