FBI uncovers second person leaking government documents

More than a year after Edward Snowden's initial leaks, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has identified a “second leaker,” or an employee of a federal contracting firm suspected of leaking documents to the press.

The unnamed leaker's home was recently searched and a criminal investigation has been opened, according to Yahoo News. The suspect allegedly handed over documents about how the U.S. government assembles its terrorist watch list.

The Intercept, a website by Glenn Greenwald, published a leaked document along with further findings in early August. The published document dated back to August 2013, which was months after Snowden had gone to Hong Kong and revealed himself as the primary leaker of National Security Agency (NSA) documents.

A new documentary on Snowden, “Citizenfour,” highlights this possible second leaker, and in a recent radio show interview, Jeremy Scahill, a journalist, mentioned the source as an “extremely principled and brave whistleblower.”
