Authorities in Finland detained Russian citizen Maxim Senakh on Aug.8 in connection with computer fraud charges in Minnesota, stemming from allegedly distributing malware on computer servers and raking in millions of dollars in ill-gotten gains, Reuters reported Thursday.
But Russian officials cried foul at the detention, made at the behest of the U.S., with Reuters quoting Konstantin Dolgov, the special representative for human rights in the Russian Foreign Ministry, as saying it was "another demonstration of the illegal practice of detaining Russian citizens abroad launched by U.S. authorities."
The United States has 45 days to start extradition proceedings by filing an official request, the Finnish justice ministry has said.
