“Guccifer” returns with new list of compromised high-profile accounts

A notorious hacker's list of breached accounts has grown substantially.

According to The Smoking Gun, in addition to compromising former President George H.W. Bush's family and former deputy CIO Roy Apseloff's email accounts, “Guccifer,” an anonymous hacker, claims to have breached the online accounts of comedian Steve Martin, editor Tina Brown and author Candace Bushnell, among others.

Guccifer attained access to the various accounts through social engineering. He often pores over possible victims' Wikipedia pages in order to correctly guess password hints. Once inside an account, Guccifer downloads the victim's address book, which often leads to more vulnerable accounts.

In addition to getting actors' phone numbers, such as Robert Redford, he also searches for personal email addresses.
