Hackers targeted Chase Corporate Challenge site to find infiltration route

A previously known breach of the JPMorgan Chase Corporate Challenge website has now been confirmed as one of many avenues cyber attackers explored while trying to gain access to the bank's internal systems.

A New York Times article disclosed Wednesday that the Corporate Challenge site breach (discovered on Aug.7 and resulting in participant passwords and contact information being accessed) was “one of several gateways that hackers tested.” The gateway wasn't one of the “multiple entry points” hackers found, however.

Saboteurs targeting JPMorgan Chase ultimately struck hard in a mass breach, which compromised 76 million household and seven million small business accounts. The article noted that hackers exploits, leading up the broader breach, serve as a reminder of a “stark new reality for American corporations” where attackers take aim with persistence, scanning firms' systems and vendors for vulnerabilities until they gain entry.
