AOL Mail hack furthers spam campaign using spoofed accounts

AOL has confirmed that it working to address an issue impacting its Mail service, where users are being spammed by spoofed accounts.

On Tuesday, TechCrunch reported that AOL Mail was hacked, resulting in an influx of users having their email accounts targeted by spammers. In the campaign, miscreants used spoofed accounts, made to look like those of legitimate Mail users, to fire off spam to other users.

Sources close to AOL told TechCrunch that less than one percent of all Mail users were impacted by the issue. According to some reports, the spam campaign has persisted for about a week.

As a precaution, AOL Mail users are advised to update their passwords and not click spurious links or attachments sent via email.
