DDoS mitigation firm notes dramatic increase in reflection attack style

Over the past year, saboteurs have increasingly used distributed reflection denial-of-service (DrDoS) attacks to obscure their deeds and amplify the size of their attacks, a global attack report found.

Prolexic, a DDoS mitigation firm, released its “Q3 2013 Global Attack Report” on Wednesday revealing that DrDoS attacks increased 265 percent between Q3 2012 and Q3 2013.

The report, which analyzed attacks against Prolexic's customer base, predicted that attackers will likely continue to use DrDoS attacks since they can generate higher volumes of traffic using reflection and amplification techniques, as well as camouflage their identity by spoofing IP addresses.
