RSA fraud report examines August phishing trends

Phishing is down 22 percent from July to August, but U.S. banks experienced an increase in phishing volume – 59 percent to 72 percent – and phishing against credit unions rose to 12 percent from five percent, according to the RSA Monthly Fraud Report September 2014

At 61 percent of phishing volume, the U.S. continues to be the most targeted country in August, the report indicates. The Netherlands and China each accounted for six percent of total attacks and the U.K. and Canada each accounted for four percent.

At 35 percent, the U.S. is the top hosting country for phishing in August, with Hong Kong in second at 13 percent of total attacks, according to the report. 

Based on 33,145 phishing attacks identified in August, global organizations suffered an estimated $282 million in losses as a result of phishing, the report indicates.
