Experts detect spike in Rovnix trojan infection in U.K.

Researchers at Bitdefender have noticed an uptick of Rovnix trojan injections in the U.K.

More than 130,000 computers have been infected by the malware in the country over the last three months, according to a recent release. Experts have determined that the spike is a targeted effort by attackers, seeing as a majority of the infections (87 percent) were found in the U.K., whereas other countries impacted by the malware – like Germany, Italy, the U.S. and Iran – account for infections between the 0.5 percent and four percent range.

While the malware is not new, the latest iteration encrypts communication with command-and-control servers to go undetected.

“The switch to encrypted communications shows that this e-threat is still under active development,” said Catalin Cosoi, chief security strategist at Bitdefender. “We won't see the last of it for some time yet.”
