The City College of San Francisco (CCSF) reported that student information of about 7,500 students was compromised when an employee responded to a phishing email, college spokesperson Jeff Hamilton told SCMagazine.com via emailed comments.
On April 15, an employee responded to a phishing email that was disguised as a legitimate request for student information, according to a Notice of Data Breach.
Student information including names, addresses, social security numbers and other information contained in financial aid applications may have been compromised.
“We deeply regret any inconvenience this incident may cause you and are taking additional actions to enhance our IT systems moving forward to help prevent against similar incidents in the future,” college's Chief Technology Officer Jay Field said in the Notice of Data Breach
Officials said there is no evidence that information in the email has been used and are offering those affected one year of free identity protection services.
